More than 50 dead and 400 injured in Nicaraguan protests

The government of Daniel Ortega faced roadblocks and strong protests on Saturday, while the army and the episcopate press for a dialogue to end the crisis that left 51 dead in less than a month in Nicaragua.

The armed forces issued a statement in which they called to stop the violence, while they expressed their solidarity with the families of those killed in the protests.

The protests have spread in at least eight departments of the country, where in the last two days there have been clashes between protesters, police, and government shock forces.

The most violent clashes took place in Masaya (south), where the Nicaraguan Association for the Protection of Human Rights (ANPD) reported more than 100 injured.

We want to reiterate the call and commitment to put an end to death and destruction to stop spilling our brother’s blood,”

said Ortega in a statement read on television.
