New, expensive building for the Supreme Court

The Judicial Branch will pay more than 102,000 dollars per month (about 55 million colones) for renting Impala Building in Sabana Sur.

160 Constitutional Chamber public servants will work in Impala Building, which will cost near 2,000,000 daily colones. The reason behind this is a lack of space in the Supreme Court of Justice.

Ana Isabel Romero Jenkins, executive chief of the Judicial Branch, confirmed the rental is a fact. The legal department is preparing the final document. Once the contract is endorsed, the owner company will have a 90-days period to make some refurbishmests requested by the Constitutional Court.

They plan to rent the building for 12 years, but they expect to be able to buy it through a trust deed with Banco Improsa S.A.

At first, a 35,000,000-colones monthly rent was negotiated, but that amount increased due to some changes demanded by the judicial branch.

However, Mario Redondo, member of Alianza Democrática Cristiana (ADC) , is against the decision:

The country is experiencing a fiscal crisis, resources are limited and the budget does not cover everything. This building, due to its cost, does not seem an essential and urgent spending,”

said the legislator.
