New lagoons near Turrialba’s active crater

OVSICORI

The climatic conditions of the last weeks favored the formation of two lagoons near the active crater of Turrialba Volcano.

The accumulation of water in the colossus has been visible for some days. However, with the heavy downpours that faced the country the water level rose.

Guillermo Alvarado, a geologist at the National Seismological Network (RSN), explained that this is normal and that three lagoons usually form and

those closest to the active crater often change color. Those farthest, change less,” said the geologist.

These formations are similar to the one in Irazú Volcano, in a sector known as Playa Hermosa.

Indeed, several images provided to CRHoy.com this week show the lagoon in that site and the formation – again – of the active crater green lake.
