New law would protect water sources

In the coming days, members of the Parliament will vote the new Water Bill and in case of approval, people who damage water sources must pay penalties, fix their mistakes and compensate the affected ones.

On national broadcast, president of AYA (Aqueducts and Sewage system), Yamileth Astorga, minister of agriculture, Felipe Arauz and minister of environment, Edgar Gutiérrez urged lawmakers to endorse the popular initiative.

AYA president said that the drought of the last three years revealed the water crisis and it indicates that Costa Ricans have to act.

According to Astorga, the country needs a visionary legal framework that ensures water protection and its proper use.

If approved, the law will generate financial resources to invest in water conservation and sustainable use.
