New Poás eruptions are expected in the short term

Volcanologists from the Volcanology and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI) argue that new eruptions may occur in the Poás Volcano in the short term.

In a report issued on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m., scientists confirmed that in the previous 24 hours there were “few and small” groundwater discharges.

In addition, some internal earthquakes were detected due to rock breaking.

On the other hand, at 12:27 a.m. there was an earthquake located 1 km southwest of the volcano with a magnitude of 2.3 degrees.

The plume is being scattered mainly west-northeast, but so far there have been no reports of ash fall or sulfur odors,”

said the institution.

On Tuesday, volcanologists from OVSICORI visited the volcano to assess the damage caused by the strong explosion last Saturday.

The most important eruptions occurred on April 14th and 22nd. The latter was characterized by the explosive discharge of incandescent material.
