Nicaragua says Costa Rica wants to take away its “bonanza”

Nicaragua accuses Costa Rica of claiming the maritime space that was given to it following a border dispute with Colombia in 2012.

This Thursday Carlos Argüello, Nicaragua’s agent to the ICJ, had the opportunity to present his allegations as part of the dispute that was filed in court to establish the maritime boundaries between the two countries in the Pacific and the Caribbean Sea.

Costa Rica accused Nicaragua of “reinventing geography” on Monday and attempting to set boundaries in the Pacific without taking into account a portion of land that involves Cape Santa Elena and, consequently, the Nicoya Peninsula.

Costa Rica has decided that it wants to participate in Nicaragua’s bonanza and wants to see how it takes away part of what we have recovered from Colombia. So that point, in order to try to avoid this blow, was presented by Dr. Remiro Brotóns, who conveyed a very effective position,”

said Argüello, in statements made to the government official.

Nicaragua has an interest in promoting oil exploration in its maritime territory. That is why the border limits are vital.

The Nicaraguan agent affirms that San Juan River underwent changes in its mouth and that it has moved towards the North. In his view, Costa Rica wants to establish maritime boundaries in the Caribbean where the mouth of the river currently sits.

The process is agreed to finish on July 13th.
