No more requests for IVF permit

The Ministry of Health recently gave a permit to perform the in vitro fertilization (IVF) technique in Costa Rica. However, this has been the only request to apply the procedure in a Costa Rican laboratory.

Dr. Allan Varela, head of the Health Services Unit, said the lack of bidders is attributed to the cost of the initial investment to offer the procedure, which includes planning time, cost of personnel and specialists and equipment cost.

The standard set by the Ministry regulates not only the number of people who must participate in the process, but also the equipment that must be used, to ensure the quality of the results.

The technique was banned by the Constitutional Court in 2010, but in 2012, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights ruled Costa Rica must allow it.
