Finger-pointings and internal accusations among officials put the Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ) in a risky situation.
In recent months, multiple controversies in the institution go beyond pursuing or investigating criminals.
The most recent case appeared this week. The Internal Affairs section carried out a follow-up, considered illegal by the Judicial Inspection, in 2015 against Geovanny Rodríguez, who serves as head of the Department of Criminal Investigations.
They accused Rodríguez for apparently holding a meeting with suspected drug traffickers. That case, according to general director Walter Espinoza, was not accredited by the court.
In another case, Internal Affairs agents carried out a follow-up, also illegitimate, in November 2015 against officials from the Homicides section, who were apparently drinking liquor in a Guápiles bar.
Espinoza accepted the existence of internal discrepancies that could tarnish the image of the judicial police.
There are more accusations and more problems among officials in the institution. As consequence, rather than facing the growing criminal activity in the country, the OIJ has a more important duty: solve the problems in its own house.
