Only 81% of owners have paid the vehicle ownership tax

To date, the National Insurance Institute (INS) has raised about 190 billion colones for the collection of the vehicle ownership tax.

Róger Arias, head of Insurance Management Solidarity from the INS declared that the institution started collecting the vehicle ownership tax on November 1st and even though authorities expected to raise 216 billion colones, to date only 81% of the owners have paid the tax and now near 238,000 vehicle owners are circulating without the document on Costa Rican streets.

Motorcyclists are the most delinquent debtors so far and more than 100,000 have not paid the tax.

Remember that for each day that passes, delay interest increases and if the Traffic Police stops you, you will have to pay a fine of 51,300 colones and authorities could also keep the plates of your vehicle.
