Opposition claims fraud and blames Ortega for violence after elections in Nicaragua

The Nicaraguan Broad Front for Democracy (FAD) rejected the elections won by Sandinismo and blamed President Daniel Ortega for seven violent deaths, although the police only confirmed five.

The elections were a fraud (…) the invalidity of the elections was given by the people of Nicaragua when more than 70% did not participate,”

said the FAD leader, Violeta Granera, at a press conference.

The main opposition force believes that the abstention – the electoral tribunal placed it close to 48% – was “a punishment vote” against the Ortega regime and the electoral system that is completely collapsed.

The group, which did not attend the elections, citing lack of conditions and transparency in the process, attributed the violence after the elections to repeated electoral fraud and the desperation of communities that feel deceived.

The leader of the FAD directly accused Ortega as responsible for the seven deaths, all the violence on the Caribbean coast and the persecution of many citizens.

After attending Sunday’s vote, Ortega criticized the opposition for promoting abstention and confrontational messages.
