Ortega: Nicaragua is ready for bilateral dialogue with Costa Rica

Nicaragua is ready to resume the binational commission with Costa Rica to discuss matters of common interest, after years of tensions over border disputes, said President Daniel Ortega on Friday.

According to Ortega they are ready to discuss border security, sea, air and counter-narcotics matters.

During the ceremony of the 37th anniversary of the Air Force, President Ortega called for the reactivation of the binational commission

to help Nicaragua and Costa Rica to strengthen our relations.”

Regarding the pending outcome of the trial on the maritime boundary in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, Ortega said

it should not be an element that pollutes our relations.”

The Nicaraguan President reminded that there are thousands of Nicaraguans who live and work in Costa Rica and there are thousands of Costa Ricans who visit Nicaragua and others who are investing there.

The binational commission, a dialogue mechanism to discuss issues of bilateral interest, has not work in a decade, due to the border and immigration disputes between the two countries.
