In February, The Costa Rican Railway Institute (INCOFER) will start the bidding process to build an electric train, which will be a priority for candidate Carlos Alvarado if he wins the presidential elections.
Since the beginning of the electoral campaign, I have proposed the construction of the electric train as a priority to decongest and expedite the way of transportation in the Greater Metropolitan Area, the most populated region of Costa Rica,”
affirmed the presidential candidate of Acción Ciudadana, in a press release.
The rapid passenger train would connect Paraíso de Cartago with downtown Alajuela, passing through San José and Heredia. In addition, a branch would go from San José to Ciruelas de Alajuela.
According to Alvarado, the project already has designs, pre-feasibility studies, and financing from the Central American Bank for Economic Integration and the Green Climate Fund, among other entities; and around 30 companies are interested in participating through the concession.
This electric train would transport around 250 thousand people daily. The project would include 60 flyovers along the way and 25 to 30 multimodal stations.
