A photograph in social networks worries residents from the South zone.

The image of a huge crocodile was published on Zona Sur Vive y Lucha website.

Apparently, the animal was seen in front of Punta Zancudo estuary. The publication indicates that the relevant authorities must do something, as this is a risk for both local and international tourism.

Ilsia Olivares, Vida Silvestre coordinator in Osa Conservation Area, stated that they have no formal report or complaint about the situation, but everyone knows that this is their natural habitat.

They have lived in this area for many years, many people are saying that there is a crocodile overpopulation, but SINAC (National System of Conservation Areas) has not done any study to define whether that is true or not,

declared Olivares.

The Conservation Area hasn’t had a report on accidents that involve tourists our crocodiles.

Olivares said that it is normal for people to see them:

People are astonished because there are some that are huge, but the estuary sector is their natural habitat. Yes, they can reach the beach, but you also have to know that they only attack in self-defense , because they feel threatened… The population must know that people must respect the area where they are.

On July 2016, Tamarindo beach had to be evacuated after a tourist lost part of his ankle, due to a crocodile attack.
