Plastic waste in the sea will become more than that

Carolina Sevilla, former consul.

About 80% of marine pollution is produced by plastic. In Costa Rica the reality is no different. According to the University of Costa Rica (UCR), plastic is the main solid waste found on beaches.

The numbers show a problem and a Costa Rican former Consul has the solution: turning this plastic into thread so that it is used to manufacture vehicle and computer parts or high couture.

Within two months, the first collection center for the search, collection and treatment of plastic found on the beaches will be inaugurated in Paquera de Puntarenas.

Carolina Sevilla was Costa Rican consul in New York. However, in 2016 she decided to turn her life around. Not only did she return to Costa Rica to live in front of Playa Hermosa, but decided to start a new challenge.

She met the international company Bionic and proposed to work with them. They accepted and that was only the beginning of the project, which is a pioneer in the country and in the Latin American region.

Now the goal between this company, the local organization Nicoya Peninsula Waterkeeper and Sevilla is clear: to take out at least 14 tons of plastic per month from the sea and from the dumpsites of 10 Pacific communities to take them to different parts of the world for processing.

For me it’s everything. I have no children and I am over 40 years old, this is my baby. It’s such a great joy to be able to communicate to the world that soon we’ll start to see that the collection of a clothing brand or Porsche car seats will be made with the plastic we take off the beaches of Costa Rica,”

said Sevilla to the press.
