Preserve Planet will reveal impact of plastic pollution on the oceans

On Tuesday, Preserve Planet Organization will hold a free, open conference aiming to show Costa Ricans the impact of plastic pollution on our oceans.

The event will be held at the Roberto Sasso Sasso Auditorium from the Veritas University in Zapote.

This conference seeks to inform the authorities, the media and the general public about the urgency for all actors in the production and consumption cycle to become aware of the role they play. In addition, they will be able provide solutions that mitigate this environmental problem.

During the activity, national and international experts will comment on their experiences at a local, regional and global level. In addition, they will show the damage that plastic products are causing to water, fauna and flora in the seas.

According to research by the international conservation organization 5 Gyres, 5 years ago it was determined that there are more than 269 thousand metric tons and 5.25 billion plastic particles in the oceans.

Some of the most outstanding experts who will visit Costa Rica and belong to this non-profit institution are Anna Cummins and Marcus Eriksen.

Cummins is an expert on International Environmental Policies in Areas of Concentration, focused on marine conservation and environmental education. Eriksen is a Ph.D. in Educational Sciences from the University of Southern California.

The regional analyzes will be presented by Sergio Izquierdo, Guatemalan researcher of the organization “Save the Planet”.

There will also be a sample “In Situ” of the collection of plastic waste, on a beach in the Pacific coast of Costa Rica.
