President Alvarado downplays university threats

President Carlos Alvarado was unconcerned and seems not to give importance to the threat of a group of students from the University of Costa Rica (UCR) who told him:

Carlos, this won’t stay like this,”

after their blockades in front of the Law School were dismantled last week.

On Tuesday, the President said he does not want to “echo” those voices that are not in accordance with the country’s peaceful and dialogue tradition.

He insisted that his administration will continue to ensure the preservation of peace and public order in the national territory against riots such as those carried out by the students of the UCR and the National University the previous week.

The government is a guarantor of peace, of compliance with the law and we will continue doing that. I prefer not to echo voices that are not consistent with our own constitutional and institutional order. Our guarantee is to preserve the peace, public order and focus on the progress of the country. My concern is to bring the country forward, that is my real concern,”

said Alvarado.

The threat came from a group that calls itself the Alternative UCR, one of the existing political groups in that higher education center.

Through a post on their Facebook profile, the group “condemned” the government’s actions around the protests and issued a strong warning:

the student community is fed up with their abuse and violence, if you want to see students on the street, you will,”

they said.

The text was posted on November 21st, the day when a group of vandals tried to burn Public Force officers trying to end a blockade in front of the UCR Law School. The group claimed to protest about cuts in the university budget that do not exist and that even a day later, the university rector Henning Jensen went out to deny.
