President pleases UCR students and orders investigation to Public Force

President Carlos Alvarado pleased the students and authorities of the University of Costa Rica (UCR) by ordering an investigation on the measure of the Public Force who, in compliance with their work, went inside the university to arrest the demonstrators, who even placed barricades in the streets of San Pedro on Wednesday night.

The president said he regretted these events that occurred in the framework of the strike against the tax plan promoted by his administration and ordered the creation of a commission to investigate the issue.

Although constitutional lawyers insist that university autonomy only applies to administrative issues and academic freedom, Alvarado supported the creation of a commission that will investigate the actions of the police, composed of the Minister of Justice, Marcia González, the Vice Chancellor of the UCR, Carlos Araya, and the President of the Student Federation of the UCR, Renato Alvarado.

This was the result of four hours of meeting between Alvarado and the presidents of public universities. The president received them in Zapote, although he has not received the rest of the union groups behind the protest movements and blockades throughout the country.

Alvarado supported the creation of this investigation to analyze the behavior of the officers despite the fact that a section of these workers said they felt betrayed by the president and his administration, because they had the order to prevent any blockade in the streets of the city.
