Private sector to pay ¢ 544 billion in bonuses

The Costa Rican private sector will pay about ¢ 544 billion in Christmas bonuses to more than 1 million 200 thousand workers.

The calculation was made by the Costa Rican Union of Chambers and Associations of the Private Business Sector (UCCAEP) based on data from the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS). It includes workers from private enterprises, domestic service, self-employed people and employees with special agreements.

The payment of ordinary and extraordinary overtime and other wage amounts (commissions, incentives, wages in kind) received by the worker during the 12-month period from December 1st last year and November 30th 2016 is included in the calculation of the “aguinaldo”. The total of salaries accrued during that period is divided into 12.

Paying the aguinaldo is compulsorily for all employers during the first 20 days of December, as stipulated by labor laws.

Meanwhile, this Friday December 2nd, the government will pay the bonus to almost 210 000 active officials, temporary or substitute staff and pensioners from the National Budget.

Remember that the bonus will not apply to any withholding, except alimony, to be paid two business days after the Christmas bonus.
