Proposal to reduce work hours for parents with children under 15 years old

A bill seeks to reduce the daily working day in public and private employment for workers with children under 15 years old.

The initiative, presented by legislator Jorge Arguedas, from Frente Amplio, aims to create a license without salary even for part-time, so that workers can raise their children.

According to the proposal, the benefit would apply only when there are children with a minimum age of 3 months old and a maximum of 15 years old.

Whoever obtains this prerogative must spend this time with their children, fulfilling their tasks and needs,”

clarifies the text.

That is, they could not use that time in another company or any other economic activity. Otherwise, they risk being fired.

The initiative points out that, in order to benefit from this right, workers should comply with the following requirements:

-Make a formal request in writing and duly signed to the employer.
-Submit a certificate issued by the Civil Registry or by a notary public on their status as parents of the minors.
-The request must be made one month before the granting of the license.
-Official certification of the school attended by your children.
-The permit could be renewed the following year.

This project arises from the need to create incentives for children to have quality time their parents. Several studies show that one of the barriers to paternity or maternity is the labor dynamics that our young people face today and that makes them think of not having children,”

said Arguedas.
