Protocol of attention for transsexuals is 50% ready

The Medical Management of the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) is making huge steps in the development of the protocol of hormonal and psychological care for transsexual people.

Although less than a month ago the Board of Directors agreed to provide this service and gave it a period of three months, it already has a 50% progress.

María Eugenia Villalta, the institution’s medical manager, said she would expect it to be implemented by the end of this year.

This is a protocol that needs the participation of psychiatrists, general praticioners and specialists in pharmaco-epidemiology, because the drugs have side effects. And that interdisciplinary group has made a 50% progress,”

Said Dr. Villalta.

The doctor commented they had begun to work on the matter before the decision of the Board was made, because one hospital was already providing treatment to a person who required it.

The idea of the CCSS is to prevent a series of physical and emotional health complications that these people face when self-medicating. José Luis Loría, a member of the board and who was in charge of this initiative, indicated that they expected about 100 people to benefit from the service.
