PUSC does not comply with gender parity

The Christian Social Unity Party completed its provincial assemblies where they elected their candidates for legislators. These appointments must be ratified by the National Assembly of the group.

However, the PUSC headings fail to comply with the gender parity rule of the Supreme Election Tribunal, which says that a single gender cannot head more than four provinces.

The Social-Christians chose five men and only two women, so a heading could change in the National Assembly.

The party appointed Pedro Muñoz as the first place in San José, while in Alajuela it chose Erwen Masís and in Puntarenas, Óscar Cascante. They join Pablo Heriberto Abarca and Rodrigo Peña, who were elected last week as the first place in Cartago and Guanacaste, respectively.

The only two women who are heading the province are Aracelly Salas in Heredia and Maria Marta Carballo in Limón, chosen the week before.

In San José, a woman, Maria Vita Monge, was chosen in the second place.

If the national assembly ratifies these appointments, the TSE may reject them, so that the body must make decisions and some appointment may change to meet the 4-3 in terms of gender.

The parties have until October 20 to register the candidacies for the 2018 elections.
