Quetzals in artificial nests

RBBNM

The Quetzal is a bird that lives in cloud forests and has high tourist interest because of its beauty.

The quetzal conservation program in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve (RBBNM) has been carrying out the project of “artificial nests” for some time, which seeks to support the conservation of the species.

In a video provided by the communication office of the Tropical Science Center (CCT), you can observe one of these artificial nests with the bird in the process of nesting.

The project is located within the Reserve of Monteverde and has trap cameras that aim to document in detail the entire process.

During the 2017 season of the CCT quetzal monitoring, research and conservation project, seven nests have shown some degree of activity and two of them are already incubating.

The project has been trying to test a new architecture in nests, which consists of making them on metal tubes and in height in order to prevent predators from having access to them.

This project not only supports the conservation of the species in the Monteverde Cloud Forest, but it also helps obtaining data that could positively impact the knowledge about the bird and its reactions to possible changes in the environment, as a result of climate change and other factors.

According to Yoryineth Méndez, head of the RBBNM research program, the project will evaluate the impact and other factors in order to see the feasibility of installing new nests in December 2017.
