Rangers found a dredge and an apparent illegal runway in Sierpe area

Rangers from Sierpe area, in Osa, carried out an inspection on the lagoon sector and the wetlands, where they found a dredge and they also confirmed the presence of what could be an illegal runway.

The day after the inspection, they returned to the place and the dredge was not there. A video shows the possible track, that could be being used by drug-trafficking groups.

This is denounced by Mauricio Álvarez, president of the Conservation Federation of Costa Rica (FECON), who states that these situations are little-by-little destroying the natural reserve of the place.

The lagoon has a water mirror of about 1.02 km2 and it is more than 2 meters deep. It has a narrow exit that flows into Sierpe River, that reaches the coastal part, where the largest portion of the wetland is located.

According to FECON representative, traffickers would apparently be dredging the place to cut the water entry towards the lagoon.

However, in addition to the dredger and the runway, the park rangers found a boat on a rustic dock, with a possible driftnet used for illegal fishing.
