Reconstruction of dams would reduce flood risk

Estrada, Luisa Este, and Matina are some of the communities most affected by floods. In July, dozens of families were evacuated from their homes due to heavy rain emergencies.

This week, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MOPT) announced that the dams in Matina have already been rebuilt, which would reduce the risk of flooding in those areas.

The works will also serve as a measure of containment to the overflows of the Matina-Chirripó River, for the benefit of the towns of Trinidad, Pueblo Nuevo, and Veintitrés Millas.

In January 2018, the dam of that canton suffered a 200-meter rupture due to the overflow of the river.
