RECOPE defends itself from referendum against monopoly

The Costa Rican Oil Refinery (RECOPE) defended its functions and history, before the popular initiative to open the fuel market and thus bid farewell to the monopoly.

Over the years, Costa Rica built a national system of fuels that has allowed us to have a continuous supply (…) It is a national system that includes more than 500 kilometers of pipeline,”

said Sara Salazar, executive president of RECOPE.

Salazar used the opportunity to tell part of the history of the institution, to remind people that during Hurricane Otto, which affected the country in November, there was no fuel shortage.

Day after day the supply has been guaranteed … This is a sign that we have been fulfilling the task assigned to us when the Costa Rican State decided to have energy resources under its control and assigned RECOPE to manage the monopoly of Oil products,”

added Salazar.

This week, the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) authorized the collection of signatures to make a referendum aiming to open such a monopoly.

The proposal is based on the libertarian bill entitled “Opening the State Monopoly of RECOPE so that there is competition and we all benefit.”

Salazar preferred not to answer when asked whether she would sign such a request for popular consultation.
