Report on GMOs causes debate in Costa Rica

Recent analysis of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) has attracted attention in Costa Rica.

Almost all Costa Rican municipalities have banned GMOs, mainly because they are considered hazardous to health. However, the National Academy of Sciences of the United States argues that GM crops are similar to regular crops.

Environmentalists argue that large companies producing GMOs could be behind the research. Nevertheless, a renowned international expert asks to leave prejudices aside in order to hear evidence-based science.

It seems that automatic rejection has been reinforced for many years, but this report allows us to say they are as safe as non – GM food. This information is based on science and should have a space similar to the one the opposing side has,”

said an international official.
