“Revenge Fires” tripled in July

Arson increased in July. The Fire Department reported that 28% of those cases were caused by people looking for revenge, motivated by passion problems or to hide crimes (as murder, drug trafficking, etc.) A few of them have been related to insurance fraud cases.

So far this year, July has been the month with the highest number of reported arson. A total of 6 cases were investigated for these reasons.

From the preventive point of view, very little can be done in the cases of arson, because what they (culprits) want is to cause damage,”

said Alex Solís, chief of the Prevention and Research Unit of the Fire Department.

In 2014, the rescue unit investigated 25 cases classified as arson, but in 2015 the number reached to 32 confirmed cases.

In 2016 (until the first week of August), a total of 16 cases have been reported. However, the number could be higher, because only 20% of fires are investigated, explained Solís.
