Rice growers insist to the Goverment on declaring product shortage

About 150 rice produces gathered at a Sabana tennis club for their 12th National Congress requested the Government to declare a shortage on the cereal.

This will allow to have a more competitive price for the sector and still will be lower than in the international markets, according to Minor Barboza Esquivel, executive director.

He added that the problem is caused by imports that has distorted the market and that’s why local producers don’t get paid a fair price.

Representatives of the group had met with officers from the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Trade, and Farming since last September. However, these meetings haven’t reached a ruling on the subject yet.
