The cracks that occurred after the eruptions of June 2017 in the Rincón de la Vieja volcano are growing in length, opening and depth, as determined by a publication of the Guanacaste Conservation Area (ACG).
The last monitoring carried out in the area was at the end of August. It was established that the largest opening can reach up to 50 centimeters. Some of these cracks, the ACG said, cut the walls of the southeast crater edge vertically and others are concentric to the edge of the south side.
Precisely on the south side, not only can the cracks be seen on the surface but continue in depth. In an inspection carried out last June it was determined that the maximum opening was 30 centimeters.
This area is very susceptible to erosion due to the flow of water, since it is inside a microbasin that flows into the active crater,”
said the ACG.
