Solar traffic lights in San José!

Eighty-three traffic lights are operating with solar energy in San José. It was informed by The Directorate General of Traffic Engineering, that also assured that they are avoiding the consumption of electricity to reduce the carbon footprint.

The total project will approach 474 traffic lights in San José, Alajuela, Heredia and Cartago. It aims to improve road safety and prevent blackouts or power outages that affect the system operation. Thus, it is intended to prevent accidents or traffic congestion, as well as to reduce power consumption.

The MOPT intends to invest 10 million colones a month in electricity costs in the capital, billed by the National Power and Light Company (CNFL); with traffic lights powered by solar energy, that amount would reduce to 1 million colones.
