Solís talked about the Haitian migrants’ situation at the General Assembly of the UN

President Luis Guillermo Solís reiterated his concern about the arrival of Haitians who come from Brazil looking for a better quality of life, during his speech at the meeting of world leaders at the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN).

He declared that Costa Rica has helped migrants since its independence in 1821, but due to current migration situation, the country has had to divert resources to address the situation.

The meeting aims to find comprehensive, joint and lasting solutions to the challenges that involve large movements of refugees and migrants.

Chancellor of the Republic Manuel González said that the best solution for mass migration is that countries focus their public policies on the welfare of its citizens, making proper reforms that improve the quality of life, and create opportunities.

Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary General, has expressed the urgent need to address migration from a development perspective, focusing on the human rights and making aside any prejudice against these groups.
