Spain arrested suspects of transporting cocaine hidden in pineapples from Costa Rica

The Spanish police reported on Sunday that they arrested seven people in Madrid and Barcelona, suspected of smuggling cocaine hidden among pineapples. The authorities seized 67 kilos of cocaine that traveled in shipments of pineapple from Costa Rica.

The Spanish authorities indicated that the fruit had been emptied and the suspects placed compact cylinders with the drug inside them. These were lined in paraffin to isolate the drug and prevent it from being detected or wetted by the juice from the fruit.

The cargo was located at the MercaMadrid food distribution center and, according to authorities, it was necessary to open each pineapple until they found the ones with cocaine.

The shipment arrived from Costa Rica to the port of Setúbal (Portugal) and was later transferred by land to MercaMadrid, where the authorities intervened.
