Special rooms for young people with cancer

Daniel Project

On Wednesday, the Claderón Guardia Hospital opened two rooms aiming at the care of young cancer patients between the ages of 13 and 25.

The rooms are part of the Daniel project and are located on the fifth floor of the medical center. They will be the home of young people during their diagnosis and treatment.

Ligia Bodadilla, Project Daniel Founder, said that these spaces will be very useful for this population, as they are adapted according to their age. The intervention was achieved thanks to the help of several sponsors.

In total, $70,000 were invested and the spaces are equipped with electric beds, comfortable armchairs for the companion, television, a desk with computer and Internet access and two bathrooms that comply with Law 7600.

The Daniel project has also managed rooms adapted for teenagers with cancer in hospitals San Juan de Dios and Mexico. The non-profit foundation was established in 2010 to help this population.

The project was born thanks to the initiative of Daniel Arce Bobadilla, a young Costa Rican who at age 15 was diagnosed with bone cancer. Daniel was received as an exception in the National Children’s Hospital, given that this hospital does not receive children over 13 years old. Daniel saw himself as a privileged person and decided he wanted to create a hospital for teenagers. He passed away at age 19 and his mother continued with the initiative.

We know that teenagers need an appropriate environment, where they do not lose hope and the desire to continue fighting for life,”

said Ligia Bobadilla, promoter of the project.
