Taxi drivers will demonstrate against Uber again on Tuesday

The leader of the taxi drivers, Rubén Vargas Campos, announced on Facebook that the union will hold a demonstration on July 23rd, starting at 9:00 a.m. in Paseo Colón to support the legislators who promote the draft Law of reform of the system of paid transport of people and regulation of the companies of technological platforms of transport.

In the video he said that, whatever the outcome of the debate of the bill, the union will keep alive the contentious administrative process that raised to object the operation of Uber in the country.

Given the rise of new methods of transport, which have not been regulated yet, Costa Rica, like all countries in the world, is in need of laws that impose regulatory parameters on these platforms as they work in freedom with rights and obligations imposed by themselves not by the State,”

justified Vargas.

The project by which he calls to demonstrate, said Vargas, has “the virtue” of declaring the service provided by companies based on technological platforms as public.

This platform (in reference to Uber) has 22,000 employees and with our proposal we will only accept the legalization of 4,500 permits throughout the country. Today these platforms charge the fees they impose, if this law is passed, they should charge the same fare as taxi drivers,”

explained the unionist.

The leader closed his communiqués with a warning: if this Tuesday, July 23rd, the legislators approve the bill affirmatively, the taxi drivers will stay sleeping in front of the Legislative Assembly until Wednesday, the 24th.

If that day, on Wednesday, that project has not been voted on, fellow taxi driver, start looking for another job, because our work died,”

concluded Vargas.
