The best coffee in Costa Rica grows at a plantation in Alajuela

The coffee grain produced in the estate Monte LLano Bonito at Lourdes de Naranjo in Alajuela got the first prize among 44 contestants in the final round of the competition ‘Taza de la Excelencia 2016’ (Coffee Cup of Excellence 2016).

The plot owner is Francisco Mena Vílchez and he produces the variety ‘caturra’.

After being analyzed for 22 international judges, the coffee grain branded Monte LLano Bonito was given 93.4 points out of 100 points.

The winning coffee grain, along with the 21 finalist varieties, can participate in an international electronic auction, that will be held next June.

Taza de la Excelencia‘ is a well established top quality coffees competition that is held in several countries by the Alliance for Excellence (ACE).

The most important reward for coffee growers that made it into the finals is that interested buyers would offer higher prices at the auction.

The second prize was for the plantation La Sur in San Rafael Heredia, produced by Brumas del Zurqui and got 91.28 points.

In third place came the production of El Cerro plantation in San Rafael de San Ramón, cultivated by ‘Café de Altura de San Ramón Especial’, with 91.03 points.
