The consortium that will build the binational bridge was chosen

Costa Rica and Panama will start the construction of the new binational bridge in Sixaola during the first quarter of 2017, when the works awarded to the Sixaola Binational Consortium will begin. The consortium is formed by three companies: Constructora MECO (Costa Rica), Cal y Mayor Associates and MEXPRESA (Mexico).

The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), in charge of this project, will sign the contract with the selected Consortium next week.

The work will be paid by the non-reimbursable contribution of the Mesoamerican Infrastructure Fund for an amount of 10 million dollars (50% corresponding to Costa Rica and 50% corresponding to Panama), and an additional counterpart of 7.5 million dollars, which will be equally distributed between both countries.

According to Carlos Villalta, Costa Rican Minister of Public Works and Transport, the new structure will strengthen the Central American road integration and it is going to contribute to a safe and efficient transit for people crossing the border, increasing the tourist and commercial activities of both countries.
