The government is contradicting itself about MPS budget

Although the need to hire more police officers is huge, Minister of Security Gustavo Mata asked Legislators to reconsider their decision to cut the budget of PANI to give it to the institution he leads.

Taking away money from an institution such as PANI, which helps women, children and adolescents, is not the best way out, because the prevention actions from that institution are essential and therefore I respectfully ask you to reconsider this issue,”

said the Minister through a press release.

But on October 24th, President Solís declared that he was happy with the resolution, because it will allow the hiring of 1,500 officers that will help strengthen the country’s security.

Mata added that despite the contrast between his declaration and the one from the President, there are not contradictions or any communication problem among the Government.

The legislators justified their decision to cut the budget from PANI saying that the action will increase the police staff quickly, without waiting for the Corporations Act.

In the Congress, Mata’s statement generated annoyance, and legislators complained that his threat to resign earlier this month was a purely political maneuver.
