The only survivor of Liberia’s massacre recognized Ríos Mairena

The 14-year-old girl, the only survivor of Liberia’s heinous crime, fully recognized the suspect arrested on February 3rd.

The 33-year-old suspect, surnamed Ríos Mairena, was captured in his home, located a few meters from the apartment where the murder occurred on January 19th.

According to the Public Ministry, the witness identified Ríos Mairena during a recognition process carried out after the arrest.

The suspect was investigated and the hearing was held on February 4th.

The investigation conducted by the Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) started with a general analysis of the crime scene. It was determined that the murderer was undoubtedly a victims’ acquaintance: the door had not been forced, the subject had had easy access to the place and no one had seen him going in or going out.

After a review of all people close to the victims, a series of interviews and investigations, the finding of body fluids such as saliva and blood, hair elements and a blood trail on a wall, authorities were able to identify some suspects.

After ruling out several options, the OIJ found a clear suspect: Ríos Mairena. The subject is a construction worker and when checking his criminal records, authorities found a sentence for drug trafficking.

The record of that case, which dates from 2011, confirmed 2 things: the subject has a personality disorder and a photograph shows a tattoo on his back, which matches with the description that the survivor made of him.
