The President does not like baccalaureate exams

The elimination of high school exams has become an endless national debate involving many sectors. The government is not exempt from this, much less the President of the Republic.

Luis Guillermo Solís said that he does not like exams, mainly because students just memorize the topics, which does not help to improve the quality of education.

However, despite having very clear arguments, it’s also clear that exams should not be eliminated before finding and effective alternative which improves the secondary and general education in the country.

I think we have to find a standard evaluation. Evaluations are a substantial part of the teaching-learning process. Exams will remain necessary until we develop a suitable method,”

said the President.

The debate has must be held within a comprehensive framework that generates positive ideas that allow students to be well prepared to face higher education.

We need to discuss how to guarantee a quality education in schools. Exams are just a part of  this debate. The main objective is not to make school easy to finish, but to allow people to finish it with the necessary intellectual tools,”

Concluded Solís.

The baccalaureate exams this year will be applied in the first week of November.
