The reconstruction of the Black Star Line is in motion … And you can help!

A fire destroyed 97% of its structure, but its meaning remains untouched. That’s why a technical committee is working to give limonenses back their landmark building.

The Black Star Line was declared an architectural heritage before the fire but it was closed for not having the Ministry of Health’s permits.

The firm Zürcher Arquitectos donated the blueprint for the reconstruction of the building and the Ministry of Culture contributed with 150 million colones for the initial phase but it is still unknown how much the project could cost as it is only at a preliminary stage.

The reconstruction aims to keep the characteristic of the original building but new stairs, restrooms and an elevator, that complies with Act 7600, will be installed.

Black Star Line is a symbol of Limón’s culture. It operated at first as a center of social justice and over the years became a Caribbean food restaurant and lounge, called “Liberty Hall,” where Limón citizens used to organize communities activities.

Teodoro Symes is coordinating the group that is working on the reconstruction of the building. His contribution is part of RECOPE´S social responsibility works.

We are organizing a campaign to be held on March 2017. It will be a marathon where people can make donations through text messages. In addition, many activities are going to be available in order to collect contributions. We don´t know how much money we need because the project is still in its preliminary stage,

explained Symes.
