The US sanctions Rosario Murillo and adviser to President Ortega

On Tuesday, the United States imposed economic sanctions to the vice-president and first lady of Nicaragua, Rosario Murillo, and to the national security adviser of the president Daniel Ortega, Néstor Moncada, for their responsibility in abuses against human rights and acts of corruption.

The Treasury Department said the measures were taken in accordance with a decree issued on Tuesday by President Donald Trump, declaring a “national emergency to face the threat posed by the situation in Nicaragua,” a country in crisis since April due to anti-government protests that have been violently repressed by the authorities, and according to humanitarian groups resulted in more than 300 dead.
