There are 140 cases of Hepatitis A in Alajuela

The Ministry of Health reported 140 cases of Hepatitis A in Alajuela. In June alone, there were 43 patients diagnosed.

Hepatitis A is a viral disease that is transmitted from one person to another by fecal-oral route, and in some cases, as in children under six years old, it is usual for the infection to develop without symptoms.

The main symptoms presented by the affected patients were discomfort, jaundice, nausea, coluria (bile in the urine), anorexia, vomiting, acolia (discoloration of the stool), diarrhea and fever. The patients were treated at San Rafael Hospital in Alajuela, EBAIS and private clinical laboratories,”

said the Ministry in a statement.

According to the institution, the approximate time in which this condition can be detected is 30 days, so it is not ruled out that there are more than 140 cases.

Regarding the possible risk factors, it is not yet possible to establish a set of circumstances that can serve as a reference for prevention.

Self-care and food safety are the most effective measures to fight Hepatitis A. Practices such as washing hands, eating food authorized by the Ministry of Health, and avoid eating food on the street are the best solution. In addition, health authorities make a special call to restaurants to take extreme measures of hygiene of their staff,”

said the Ministry of Health.
