Tourism sector qualifies alcohol prohibition as absurd

The dry law prohibits the sale of liquor. Applies discretionary basis by each local government in the country

National Chamber of Tourism (Canatur) is saying that the implementation of the dry law or ban on alcohol sales for the upcoming election is absurd. In particular, hotel and restaurant owners are upset that some municipalities waited until the last minute to announce bans for the election on Sunday, February 2nd. The timing precludes events that some had planned in advance.

Critics also say that by giving the decision to municipalities, the inconsistent application throughout the country runs counter to the spirit of the ban. Businesses that cater to tourists are also hard pressed to explain to foreign guests why they can not serve alcohol if they are ineligible to vote.
