Treasury illegally used ₡ 48 billion

The Ministry of Finance has already illegally used 48 billion colones from the second extraordinary budget, because it still does not have the backing of the Legislative Assembly, confirmed Rocío Aguilar.

Aguilar informed that these funds correspond to maturities and, therefore, chose to pay them instead of avoiding the collection and interest or debt.

The second extraordinary budget is still under discussion in the Finance Affairs Commission, so the Treasury is already using part of the 600 billion colones it requested.

What we have is that some maturities that should have been generated in 2019-2020 onwards, were concentrated in 2018 as a result of the situation that was generated in the market in 2017, which was the announcement of liquidity issues raised by the Government and absence of placement contracts, but it is not increased debt,”

told Aguilar to reporters.

The Treasury expects August to be the last month that they have to make this type of payment without authorization from the Legislative Assembly.

The hierarch, who took office on May 8th, said that weeks after her admission, she was informed that it was not possible to make swaps, so they went to work on an extraordinary budget, which initially could reach 800 billion colones, but, they made cuts to leave it at 600 billion colones.

Aguilar argued she was unaware of the gap in the state’s finances because she was not informed by her predecessor, Helio Fallas, but rather, during a meeting that they had held days before the change of command, that topic was never discussed. They rather focused on in explaining in which organizations Hacienda participated.

On Tuesday, the Minister appeared before the Committee on Treasury Affairs where she informed the legislators about the use of resources.
