Trump threatens Venezuela with strong economic measures

On Monday, The United States increased its pressure on Venezuela by threatening Nicolás Maduro’s government with strong economic actions if it insists on convening a Constituent Assembly.

In an official note of elevated tone, President Donald Trump noted that

The United States will not stand idly by while Venezuela collapses. If Maduro’s regime imposes its Constituent Assembly on July 30th, the United States will take strong and swift economic action.”

In his statement, Trump said that the symbolic consultation organized on Sunday by the opposition made clear that the sector is in favor of democracy, freedom and the rule of law. However, said the president,

those actions are still ignored by a poor leader who dreams of becoming a dictator.”

Meanwhile, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert believes that the voice of millions of Venezuelans cannot be ignored, and for that reason

Washington calls on the Venezuelan government to abandon the proposed National Constituent Assembly.”

Likewise, the State Department called on countries in the hemisphere and around the world to ask Maduro government to

suspend a process that only seeks to undermine Venezuelan democracy.”

White House spokesman Sean Spicer had said that the massive participation in the symbolic consultation organized by the opposition in Venezuela represented an “unequivocal” message to the authorities.
