Turrialba now has a little lava lagoon

RSN

After several overflights and field analysis, the National Seismological Network (RSN) ensured the existence of a lava lagoon in Turrialba Volcano.

According to the entity, there is an opening with an axis greater than 50 meters from which you can see incandescent material.

It is a lava pond, from which passive emanations of ash occur or sometimes small eruptions, a little more explosive, that throw ballistic elements of magmatic origin to the surroundings of the active crater,”

cites the report by the scientists.

This littLe lava lagoon is the origin of the strong reddish glow visible from the crater at night.

There are other volcanoes in the world that have lava lagoons that have persisted for years, including Erta Ale (Ethiopia), Erebus (Antarctica), Kilauea (Hawaii), Nyiragongo (Democratic Republic of Congo), and Ambrym (Vanuatu),”

said the RSN.

It should be noted that the volcano Masaya, located in Nicaragua, has a lava lake since 2015. However, little lava lagoons are different, since they are smaller and don’t last as much.

Another important change in the volcano is the dimensions of its crater, which is deeper and wider than before, elliptically shaped, with its longest axis in the southwest-northeast direction, the same direction of explosive eruptions.

The activity of Arenal volcano, with its lava flows, astonished people in previous decades. Precisely, that colossus from Alajuela also reported the formation of a little lava lagoon.
