Turrialba Volcano is still active

According to the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI), Turrialba Volcano registered a moderate level of seismicity in the form of tremor, that is to say, the vibrations inside the volcano caused by the passage of gases, water or magma, through the ducts.

After 4 p.m. on Monday, a dark column of gas, steam and ash could be seen less than 500 meters above the summit.

So far ashfall has been reported in sectors such as Coronado, San Pedro de Montes de Oca, San Luis de Santo Domingo, Heredia, Moravia and Tibás. However, according to OVSICORI, the rainy conditions in the region caused a decrease in the transfer of particles.

The winds maintain a direction towards the west with speeds between 25 and 35 kilometers per hour.
