Turtles could endanger your health

Small pet turtles seem harmless, but some are actually a source of salmonella, a bacteria that causes an infection that spreads from the intestine into the bloodstream and anywhere in the body and can even cause death.

The symptoms of the disease include diarrhea with mucus and blood, high fever and severe abdominal pain. Children are often the most affected.

The United States already reported an outbreak of this bacteria. In total, 133 people are infected.

The World Health Organization said on its website that

Initial investigations identified four turtle farms in Louisiana as sources of the outbreak.”

The director of the National Children’s Hospital, Dr. Olga Arguedas, said that salmonella is also related to the consumption of mishandled chicken or eggs.

If you have a small turtle as a pet, follow these tips:
1.Wash hands thoroughly before and after handling the animal.
2.Prevent fluids from the turtle to enter children’s mouths.
3.Make sure chicken, ground beef, and eggs are cooked through.
