For the first few months of the year, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (Mopt) will focus on the expansion of the Circunvalación Norte in the sector between La Pozuelo and the Jardines del Recuerdo cemetery, and work that will connect the Caribbean Highway (Route 32) to the Circunvalación (Route 29) through Calle Blancos. Work on the Circunvalación Norte will expand the route to four lanes and replace the bridge over the river Virilla. Bids are due by mid-January and will be funded with a loan from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

Outside the metropolitan area, projects will include the enlargement of the Cañas-Liberia highway, the border highway with Nicaragua, and a new highway to San Carlos.
