Uber drivers: the government bowed down to taxi drivers

Taxi drivers celebrated that, on Tuesday,

once again, [the governing council] urged Uber and other technology platforms to stop operations until a legal framework is established.”

One of the representatives of the union of taxi drivers, Gilbert Ureña, described the decision of the Presidential House as a triumph and announce that they called off the demonstration scheduled for tomorrow.

César López, from the National Chamber of Drivers of Technology Platforms, said they are surprised and worried about the announcement, because that they are putting some 22 thousand drivers and their families at risk.

López believes the government bowed to taxi drivers.

At 6:30 pm on Tuesday, the collaborative transport application worked normally.

The document also reveals that the memo sent on July 31st, 2018, signed by Rubén Vargas, General Secretary of the Union of Costa Rican Taxi Drivers (UTC), in which requests for actions related to the transport service offered by electronic platforms, was recknognized.

President Carlos Alvarado was asked to

immediately cancel, close, and block Uber operations and its illegal management,”

all this to avoid prejudice against taxi drivers and in favor of social peace, according to Vargas.
